Top Tips – How to find your dream wedding dress

Every time I meet new brides they tell me the same thing. They just can’t find the perfect wedding dress they’re looking for. But, the problem is what is the perfect wedding dress?

If you have got married or are planning your wedding, then you’ll know, wedding dress shopping can fill even the most confident, style savvy bride with the kind of anxiety that has her waking up in the night refreshing Pinterest for wedding dress ideas.

So, let’s not beat around the bush – the wedding dress is the showstopper; the centerpiece; the main act; (gulp!) so no wonder it causes some serious bridal stress. However, the good news is, finding your ideal wedding dress really doesn’t have to be that bad. When you step back and take a deep breath, you and your wedding dress mission just need that extra bit of TLC.

TOP TIPS
As a professional bridal designer and dressmaker, here’s my top ten tips on how to start thinking about and shopping for your dream wedding dress.

YOU
Every day you dress yourself. You know what works, what doesn’t. There are some styles you avoid, some you love. The same rules will apply to your wedding dress. There’s no point going for something incredibly outlandish like you just stepped out of a Vogue centre-spread (think Carrie’s first failed marriage attempt with Big – see pic above) if you don’t do incredibly outlandish in your day-to-day life. Stay true to yourself and what works for you. Just because you’re wearing a bridal gown, doesn’t mean your daily style can’t be translated across into your wedding dress.

FIT

This is similar to point 1. The fit of your wedding dress is, in my opinion as a professional designer and dressmaker, one of the most important elements of your wedding dress. Bad fit can make the most expensive wedding dress look terrible yet elevate the simplest, modest bridal dress in comparison. Fit allows you to accentuate and flatter the parts of your body that you love and the parts that give you confidence. We all have our wobbly bits yet who cares (we’re super women!) when these can be celebrated and flattered with a wonderfully fitting wedding dress. When your wedding dress fits your body like it was made for you (and we’ll get to that later) you’ll walk down the aisle and dance into the night with glorious confidence to rival any red carpet goddess. So, whether you buy your wedding dress from a bridal boutique or have it custom made for you, make sure you enquire about the fit and alterations process and what’s included. Too often brides are left at the mercy of the bridal shop and feel they can’t express clearly how they feel in their wedding dress. Be confident and strong in your opinion. It’s your money, your wedding dress and it should be your way.

COLOUR
Modern bridal trends have been embracing so many new colour tones that it’s now not unusual to deviate away from traditional white wedding dresses. From cappuccino creams to blush pink, bridal wear has far more style and individuality than it ever has done before. I think this is brilliant for brides because let’s face it, the wrong colour can really make us look like we’ve not slept for a few days or we haven’t seen sunlight in years, so choosing the colour that works best for you is important. If you’re unsure about what colours are right for your skin, there are several helpful websites online that take you through the process of assessing what skin tone you have. Be it cool, warm or neutral, you can then start to work out what wedding dress colours will suit you. Of course, these are not hard-fast rules and if you have your heart set on hot pink, then by all means go for it, it’s just helpful to know what will truly accentuate your skin to its very best on your wedding day.

TRY IT ON
Don’t be afraid to spend time going from bridal shop to shop and trying on different styles. If you’re somewhat unsure of what kind of bridal gown would suit you, it’s best you start from the ground up and spend time checking out different wedding dress styles. You’re under no obligation to buy and it’s a really useful way of trying on wedding dresses you wouldn’t normally choose. You never know, you might surprise yourself and find an unusual bridal style for your taste that really works. Try it on. CUSTOM MADE
When brides think about custom made, they often think this is an unobtainable luxury option. But that’s not always the case. Yes, having a bespoke wedding dress can be an expensive option but it’s often competitive with quality brands sold in bridal boutiques. The exception is, with bespoke you not only get what you want, but you can ensure all the above points I’ve mentioned are included. From the get go, the bespoke bridal designer will work with you to define your kind of wedding dress style and your overall vision. With helpful sketches of possible designs, you’ll then look through fabric options and colours, which is not always available within a standard boutique. With bespoke, you may like a certain wedding dress you’ve seen elsewhere but would prefer different sleeves, or a different colour, or maybe a higher or lower neckline. All these requests can be fulfilled and tweaked during your bespoke wedding dress process. It’s a really special experience that leaves you feeling very confident that you’re getting the perfect wedding dress for you.

As a professional bridal designer and dressmaker, it’s so rewarding to see my clients relax and exhale a big sigh of relief after our first consultation. They finally feel confident that they’ll have the right dress as well as the opportunity to work with me on how the dress fits them. Some brides are worried about their weight fluctuating; others are working on toning up or some brides are concerned about their bodies post-partum. All of these concerns can be set aside with a bespoke service, which is why I think this option is the best way of finding your dream wedding dress.
